Herreshoff Gallery

Nathanael G. Herreshoff became known as the “Wizard of Bristol” for his brilliant 75-year career in boat design, manufacturing, marine engineering and sailing. He produced five America’s Cup winners and hundreds of successful sailboats; authored the Universal [Yacht Rating] Rule and scientific scantling rules; and introduced modern catamarans and the first American yacht racing time allowance tables to the yachting world. He also designed highly efficient steam engines and vessels, built the first torpedo boat for the U.S. Navy and the first steam-powered fishing vessel in the United States, and contributed numerous marine design inventions.
